Shades of Gray
The Shades is a quintet specializing since 1982 in reggae, ska, 1980s 'New-wave' rock, and our own tunes, which generally fit within those genres. The ska songs we play are mostly those from the 'two-tone' movement that arose in Great Britain during the punk and post-punk era--the late 1970s and early 1980s. In addition to our own songs, we play several each by bands like The Specials, The English Beat, and The Selecter. Our reggae covers include songs by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Jimmy Cliff. The rock and new-wave covers include songs by The Clash, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, and others. The band recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, having performed regularly since 1981, with no membership changes since the mid-1980s.
