Ragtime: A Tapestry of American Spirit

Ragtime is more than just catchy tunes. It's the vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of European musical notation, the infectious rhythms brought from Congo Square by enslaved Africans, and the soulful melodies of post-Civil War working-class America. Ragtime exists because free men and women of all races and backgrounds were finally able to work together, share their stories, and create something entirely new. It's the musical embodiment of the American spirit – a beautiful blend of diverse cultures coming together in harmony.

Unique Concerts Tailored to Your Audience:

  • Marches & Rags of Atlanta: This program features music with a local connection, composed around 1900. This includes marches for the Atlanta Constitution newspaper, and Southern Railroad.
  • Ragtime Rhythms: Music of African-American Composers: We celebrate the vibrant contributions of Black composers to Ragtime, a genre born from the rich musical traditions of African Americans. This program aligns with the Society's potential interest in exploring lesser-known composers.
  • Syncopated Sisters: Women in Ragtime: Explore the often-overlooked works of female ragtime pioneers and rediscover their musical brilliance.
  • Seeds of Swing: Trace the evolution of Ragtime into the early days of Jazz, featuring music that became beloved standards and favorites. This lively program would bring the joy of Ragtime to life for your members.
  • Sousa-palooza: The music of John Phillip Sousa and the 1895 Cotton States Exposition. 
  • Circus Matinee: Favorites and screamers from the Big Top.

Our high-energy concerts are a celebration of musical discovery. We weave historical context and anecdotes into our performances, creating a truly immersive experience for all ages. Beyond the Performance:

The Atlanta Ragtime Band can perform as a full band or a smaller ensemble, perfectly suited to the opera house, or an outdoor event. We are also open to co-creating special events that would resonate with your members' interests, such as pre-concert talks or post-concert receptions.
